What is a Homesteader?
According
to a recent informal survey about homesteading, many respondents felt that
a homesteader likes to live simply, and usually away from major population
centers. Other than that, the lifestyles can vary widely. Many homesteaders
have outside income (a job somewhere else), but many depend solely on income
from the homestead.
In our survey, goats were the most popular livestock raised, and it was
an almost even split between dairy goats and meat goats, with a few fiber
goats and pack goats scattered through. A few homesteaders chose not to
raise livestock, but limited their animals to family pets, choosing to invest
their resources into farming and gardening.
Homesteader's Connection is beginning its 11th year of publication. It's a great magazine for the homesteader and the homesteader at heart, with an emphasis on all goat breeds and things relative to goats. Homesteader's Connection has dedicated readers in all fifty states, as well as some international readers.
Our magazine for homesteaders and small livestock owners is full of articles on feeding, housing, breeding, history and health. Also included is information on sheep, poultry, apiculture, gardening, rabbits and a variety of other small farm livestock and topics of interest to homesteaders. Homesteader's Connection magazine is published bi-monthly and has one of the lowest ad and subscription prices in the industry.
Homesteader's Connection is more than just a goat magazine, however, now we publish The Goat Magazine, Dedicated to Goats and the people who raise them. If you want to check out the Goat Magazine, click the link above where it says The Goat Magazine.
The Homestead Act was repealed. While it was law, it was a good way for a homesteader to gain land. Information about the Homestead Act can be found. The homestead sometimes consisted of a sod house, and the living was frugal. Homesteaders often shared information.
A homesteader today has no easy time homesteading and information is sometimes hard to come by. Free land is not readily available. Homesteading requires more management. Sometimes a homestead exemption is given in some states as a tax break. A homestead is simply a place a homesteader calls home.
